Much to my dismay I can not recommend booking this trek through Alpinistas. I do not feel that the the cost that is charged by them is worth what I received. While I had a good experience in Tanzania, it was because of the guides there and not necessarily a result of the USA based Apliniastas company. I do appreciate that they used a woman owned company in Tanzania, that was my primary reason for choosing them. It was disappointing to have paid a premium amount that would include a US guide only to have that guide no accompany us due to a scheduling error, (that is the reason we were given). I also feel that communication in preparation was not what it could have been, For example, we requested a packing list months in advance but only received with our final itinerary which we received about a month out. There were other things, such as the type of insurance needed for the trip differed from what was linked, (on the WeTravel payment page), making it confusing on what to purchase. In short, I feel like I spent too much on a trip that is already expensive. I will be more careful in the future.
I had a really great time on this trip. I need a reset weekend, and I found that even though I was with strangers, it wasn't overwhelming. Our guide, Sarah, was incredibly knowledgeable about the park as well, providing tidbits of history and trivia as we went along. She was also really great company at the campground. I would definitely do this again and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a solo adventure.
Great trip. Sarah was a great guide: a font of knowledge, she explained what the trip would entail, kept a nice pace, took adequate breaks, and always let us know what was coming next (bathroom breaks, water, sub-Dome, how to manage the cables on Half Dome, etc. Also, very funny, kept us laughing. My son and I were very happy with this experience and would highly recommend this trip.
I had a great time hiking and getting to know other women in the group. Our guide was great, friendly, supportive, and funny. She managed to get the last atom of energy from us on the hikes!
Now, when it comes to food, it was abysmal (unfortunately)... On the last evening in the camp, we were served severely undercooked noodles (we all agreed that the noodles were not cooked) with Prego sauce from a jar. Apparently, we were the only group that ever asked to go out to any of the restaurants to have some food.
